Committees / Commissioners
Western has a number of committees and commissioners that work toward improving the accessibility of the university’s campuses. The following are devoted to addressing the needs of persons with disabilities and creating a supportive environment:
This committee is comprised of students, staff and faculty members who are dedicated to creating a campus that is accessible and welcoming to all persons regardless of (dis)ability. The main responsibilities of this committee include consulting with people with disabilities and preparing Western’s annual accessibility plan.
Barrier Free Access Committee (BFAC)
The BFAC is an advisory committee to Western’s Physical Plant and Capital Planning Services. This committee makes recommendations to ensure that disability issues are addressed when existing buildings are renovated or new buildings are built on campus. BFAC welcomes persons with disabilities from the campus community to join the committee. For more information, please indicate your interest by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Campus Accessibility Review and Enhancement (CARE) Committee
This committee, chaired by the University Students Council, identifies, prioritizes and recommends expenditures for capital improvements and capital equipment requirements that will enhance accessibility for students with disabilities. They endeavor to involve students with disabilities in identifying capital needs. CARE also maintains a long-term plan for needed projects that will benefit students with disabilities. President’s Standing Committee on Employment Equity (PSCEE)
This committee is responsible for examining the University’s employment policies and practices as they relate to persons with disabilities, women, visible minorities and Aboriginal persons. PSCEE reports annually on the issue of employment equity to the President. For more information on the committee please refer to Western’s Employment Equity Policy (MAPP 3.2). The Accessibility Commissioner liaises with students with disabilities and initiates programs that generate awareness of the challenges faced by these students. This individual chairs the University Student Council’s (USC) Accessibility Committee, as well as investigates policies and procedures that inhibit accessibility. Commissioner for Graduate Students with Disabilities
The Commissioner for Graduate Students with Disabilities acts as a liaison between the Society of Graduate Students (SOGS) Council and the Western community. This individual sits on the Campus Accessibility Review and Enhancement Committee (CARE) and Western’s Ontarians with Disabilities Act Committee (WODAC) to represent accessibility issues that affect all graduate students.
